Loved in Colour

Colour-drenched pet portraits of the animals you love. Built digitally, then by hand in oil pastel, coloured pencil and mixed media, from a photograph already on your phone.

…with white highlights and gold embellishments

The collection

My portfolio gallery so far

Dogs, cats, horses and fish. Long coats, black coats, wet noses and daft expressions. Select any portrait to open it larger.

Pet portrait of a dark terrier broken into patchwork panels with gold seams.
DaphneA3 · patchwork collageBroken into panels and rebuilt, with gold running along every seam.
Pet portrait of a black dog with a green toy in its mouth against bright rainbow colours.
CassieA3 · paint & oil pastelEvery colour she was ever going to be, thrown behind her at once, with the toy she would not put down.
Pet portrait of a Scottish terrier on a lead in reds and pinks over green.
GilbertA3 · oil pastel & paint penStanding on the green with the lead still on. The whole coat is carried in reds and pinks rather than black.
Pet portrait of a black curly-coated spaniel among lavender and wildflowers.
BuddyA3 · mixed mediaEvery curl of that black coat is really blue, lilac and gold. The pale green ground and the lavender were built around him afterwards.
Pet portrait of an apricot dog lying on a blue beach chair by the sea.
CooperA3 · oil pastelThe sand, the sea and the coat, all worked in the same oranges, pinks and blues.
Pet portrait of a whippet face on violet, tongue out.
LunaA4 · coloured pencilColoured pencil only, on a solid purple ground so nothing competes with her. The tongue was the whole reason for the photograph.
Pet portrait of a black Scottish terrier with tall ears, tongue out, on pink.
ElvisA3 · oil pastel & paint penThe big ears of the pair. A black coat, but read closely and it is violet, gold and green doing the work.
Memorial pet portrait of a terrier lying among wildflowers.
BellaA3 · mixed media · memorialWildflowers built up around her, with violet worked across the top of the sheet.
Pet portrait of a Scottish terrier with a brindle coat, tongue out, on pink.
JessieA3 · oil pastel & paint penThe smaller ears of the pair. Yellow and blue run right through the brindle coat to keep it off flat brown.
Pet portrait of a tabby cat with green eyes in bright pinks and blues.
SquashA4 · oil pastel & pencilA cat is mostly whiskers and eyes. Both went on at the very end, in white paint pen, over everything else.
Memorial portrait of a skewbald horse walking across wet sand under a pink and orange sky.
TobyA3 · oil pastel · memorialWalking out across wet sand, with the whole sky coming down in pink and orange.
Memorial portrait of an orange goldfish over pink gravel and blue water.
GoldyA5 · coloured pencil · memorialProof that this is not only for dogs. The gravel is hundreds of separate pencil marks and it took longer than the fish did.
Pet portrait of a small brindle puppy held in a person’s arms.
TedA4 · mixed mediaThe arms holding him mattered as much as he did, so they stayed in and got the warmest colour on the sheet.
Portrait of a horse in profile in coloured pencil.
ClydeA4 · coloured pencilA horse in profile. Coloured pencil only, no pastel at all, so the whole thing sits flat and close to the sheet.
Memorial portrait of an apricot terrier with an open mouth over deep blue.
JillA4 · coloured pencil · memorialWarm apricot laid straight over deep blue. Every strand is pencil, which is slow and worth it.
Pet portrait of a West Highland terrier in pink, lilac and blue.
AllyA3 · oil pastelA white coat is never actually white. Hers is carried in pink, lilac and blue.

Up close

Where the light catches

Oil pastel sits proud of the sheet. Gold and white paint pen go on in the last half hour and they are what makes a piece shift as you walk past it. This is what the surface looks like from a few inches away, and it is the part a screen can never quite carry.

The planning sketch

Every piece is worked out first as a line drawing with a set of colour marks beside it. Pose, crop, where the weight sits, which colours are allowed in. You can ask to see yours before I start.

Made by hand, at my deskThe last hour of two pieces, at actual speed. No filter does this part. White paint pen into a nose, a stick of oil pastel worked into an ear, one mark at a time until the colour holds.

Memorial commissions

For the ones who are no longer here

You don't need a perfect photograph. You just need one that reminds you of them.

I have worked from old prints, from screenshots, and from photographs taken on phones long since replaced. Tell me what you want carried into the piece, and I will take care with it.
